(Mansfield) Icons, landmarks, symbols and metaphors – the rural environment provides both the inspiration and the fire behind my work. All is not well “in the country”; the history and the legends of both rural life and the natural environment are being sacrificed in the name of progress. My work is not a eulogy to these things. As we grow up, we stiffen and lose those spontaneous smiles and the unforced laughter. It’s almost as though it is trained out of us. This image came together much as I imagine its namesake nonsense rhyme did – seemingly unrelated elements joined in a lyrical dance – both designed to elicit a smile.
