DIVERSITY
Christy DeKoning (Chatham)
Transparent watercolour on Arches watercolour paper
15 x 11 inches

When I brought home a bag of corn one day from Sarah's Market, I had every intention of painting it. I sat outside in the sun and rearranged corn in a basket until I was satisfied with the composition. The way the sun sparkled and danced on the tassles was so captivating that I couldn't wait to get started! What first appeared to be just a basket of corn, upon closer inspection, became a diverse and vibrant cocktail of colour, light and shadow. Diversity began as a plein air painting, but I moved inside to finish the details, using a photograph I took to focus right in on the tassles and really see the different shapes. I began painting inside the tassles and worked outwards from there in all directions, changing brush sizes as I went along. This piece was created specifically for this show, because after all living in Chatham-Kent means enjoying family, commerce, agriculture and diversity. $325
