AMANDA CALDWELL
(St. Thomas)
I am a recent Honours Visual Arts graduate from the University of Western Ontario. I have been a practicing artist since September 2006, working in relief printmaking. As a resident of one of the most rural counties in Canada I possess a unique perspective of rural areas as both thriving, lifegiving places and as endangered natural resources on the brink of disappearance. My art is a process of deconstruction and reconstruction of landscape spaces. The design process divides the landscape into shapes but the printing process rebuilds the landscape through the layering of colour.”

FIELD I
Amanda Caldwell (St. Thomas)
Relief print
15 x 16 inches

Field I is a space caught in time, a seeming-utopia, and, an austere representation of the familiar beauty and unique life that exists in rural areas. At the same time, this piece represents something precarious, as nature is, and comments on oft-thought eminent destruction of natural spaces. While many fight to preserve these rare rural spaces, many more don’t even notice their disappearances. Field I carries a quiet message of a remembrance of those spaces that we’ve already lost, with its sombre colour and simple mystery. $185
